The current essay is aimed at the presenting the comparison of two articles, “What is Strategy” and “The Core Competence of the Corporation” in order to identify the similarities and differences between the articles. It is considerable that Porter (1996) has Porter (1996) has focussed his article on strategy and has mentioned that merely operational effectiveness is not strategy; though both are essential for competitive performance but they work in different manner. In contrast, Prahalad and Hamel (1990) in their article have illuminated that core competencies of an organization allow it to drive out competition from the market and perform like a leader. It is considerable that competitiveness originates from the capability to generate not only at a lower cost, but also more quickly than competitors.

For leadership, the articles means that there should be trade-offs in strategy so that they allow companies to compete effectively. Leaders should take into consideration that some competitive activities are incompatible, and thus, benefits in one area can be attained only at the disbursement of other area. Moreover, the articles are significant for leadership because it has been mentioned that employees require guidance in order to intensify a strategic position instead of broadening it or compromising and this can be provided by leaders only.
