There is a need of investment by foreign firms in the business activities of domestic firms as it facilitates growth in the productivity of domestic firms which is not possible in the absence of foreign firms to a large extent in Venezuela (Velde, 2006). There is a huge amount of inward foreign direct investment takes place in Venezuela as Petroleum Company named Petroleos De Venezuela is considered in the list of top twenty non-financial companies in terms of foreign assets, foreign employment and foreign affiliates in the year 2006. It is a Venezuela based company holding $ 8354 million foreign assets, and provides employment to foreigners which stood at $5373 million in monetary terms in the year 2006. In addition to this, it is composed of 30 foreign affiliates in the year 2006 as depicted in the following table. The following table also indicates that the company holds 14% of the total assets as foreign assets in the year 2006. The foreign employment was 11% of the total employment provided by the company and the number of foreign affiliates constitutes 46% of the total affiliates of the company in the year 2006 (Sauvant, Maschek and McAllister, 2009).
There was a boost in the inward FDI flows of Venezuela due to an increase in the reinvestment of the earnings and intra- company loans. FDI inflows in the Latin America and the Caribbean for the years 2011, 2012 and 2013 are $ 242 billion, 250 billion and 294 billion respectively. Along with this, inward FDI flow to Latin America and the Caribbean has grown by 10% in the year 2013. The following graph indicates the FDI inflows in Latin America and the Caribbean in billion USD for the year 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. It can be seen that there is an increase in the FDI inflows in the year 2013 as compared to previous years in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNCTAD, 2014).
