Nuttall claims ‘If every child does indeed matter, then what surely matters most in an authentic play setting is what intrinsically motivates the child, and how the child chooses to express that motivation – this will arise through ownership and playful autonomy’ (Nuttall, 2008 p. 4). Nuttall criticizes the modern day play clubs that provide the children with a pre-planned system of activities but the basic philosophy behind playwork principle is overlooked, which is that of ‘ownership’. In consensus with Nuttall, I wish to raise similar concerns about any out-of-school clubs that provide a structured environment.
