The illness of modern society is stress which is quite evident in students and also professional belonging to different sectors. The impacts of the same are on the efficiency, communication and behaviour. In many researches the term stress amongst the university student is described as the association amongst the individuals and the environment which is seen as dangerous and is beyond the ability of the student to deal with it (Larose & Boivin, 1998). Students in the university are exposed to many stressful situations; the issues which they face are different from the issues which are faced by their non-student peers. The pressure to get high grades and complete the degree is the most stressful situation. There are various other sources of stress amongst the students other than that of getting high grades; these are assignments, homework and uncomfortable classrooms. Another source of stress in addition to the requirement of academics is the time pressure and the relationship with the faculty members (Bank et al. 1992). Some students on an average might be impacted by the relationships with friends and family, sleeping and eating habits and loneliness.
The constant change of person’s behavioural and cognitive efforts to manage certain external and internal demands which are appraised as exceeding or taxing the resources of person is known as coping strategies. It has been seen in researches that there is a lower levels of psychological distress amongst the students who have an active coping style.
If the student is able to address the stress faced by them effectively then this would enable him or her to have a better life at the university and the transition from high school won’t be felt that much. Burnett, A.K. (2005) stated in one of his study that students tend to identify the importance of family members as their positive relationship used in the management of stress.
