The tenets that guide the ‘Ever Child Matters’ programme are a) to ensure enjoyment and fun b) to ensure health c) to ensure safety d) to guide children to positively contribute to the society and their development e) to guide them to ensure their economic independence (DfES, 2005). This means structuring a program that is not led by the educational curriculum of the schools that children go to (Williams, 2010). Nuttall (2008) further develops on the ECM programme’s white paper with some resentment for the modern-day after-school-clubs for children. Nuttall claims ‘If every child does indeed matter, then what surely matters most in an authentic play setting is what intrinsically motivates the child, and how the child chooses to express that motivation – this will arise through ownership and playful autonomy’ (Nuttall, 2008 p. 4). Nuttall criticizes the modern day play clubs that provide the children with a pre-planned system of activities but the basic philosophy behind playwork principle is overlooked, which is that of ‘ownership’. In consensus with Nuttall, I wish to raise similar concerns about any out-of-school clubs that provide a structured environment.

It definitely inhibits a child’s creativity and the ability to understand her/his environment. The Wyke CCC strengthens the development and ensures the intellectual freedom of the children with the aid of several activities that are organized after school and during the holidays such as T-shirt printing, cooking in fire, den building, trampolining, baking, sports and so on and all  these activities are guided by playworkers who focus on each child’s needs. Although the playworkers are acquainted with the needs of every child, their presence among the children does not necessarily facilitate children’s’ understanding if they do not recognize the necessity of their intervention or the lack of it.
